Las Vegas McCarran International Airport

Las Vegas McCarran Airport and Vanderlande cooperate to keep passengers happy

Las Vegas is undoubtedly one of the most iconic and exciting tourist destinations in the world. The community has experienced significant growth in recent years and the ‘City of Lights’ is now home to over two-and-a-half million people.

In the aptly named ‘Paradise’ area, McCarran International Airport (LAS) has grown in parallel with the city that surrounds it. Named after the late US Senator Pat McCarran and first used for commercial flights in 1948, LAS continues to serve as the gateway to this most dynamic of resorts. The airport has undergone multiple expansions since its opening to cope with the increase in air traffic, primarily due to the popularity of the Las Vegas casino industry.

Changing times

LAS has been facing increasing passenger volumes over the past few years thanks to a rise in domestic and international flights. The passenger count increased by 2.5% in 2018, and there was a 3.1% jump in the number for the first half of 2019. Continued growth has presented a number of challenges to LAS, and due to increased passenger volumes, there is potential for waiting times to go up and the customer experience to diminish.

Secure and seamless

In order to ensure that its passengers enjoy a stress-free experience at its security areas, LAS invested in Vanderlande’s PAX CHECKPOINT automated screening lanes (ASLs), combined with remote screening software. This decision was also made in close cooperation with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and all three parties began working on the checkpoint solution in the spring of 2017.

First-rate passenger experience

Now that the lanes are operational, having an integrated security solution in Vanderlande’s PAX CHECKPOINT has allowed LAS to significantly increase throughput (+40%), enhance security effectiveness and improve the passenger experience. The solution has also added to the airport’s reputation as a leader in innovative technology. Due to the flexibility and modularity of the lanes, there is also scope for LAS to keep pace with changing regulatory requirements.

“We hear nothing but rave reviews from our passengers about the technology, and from my perspective, Vanderlande has done an excellent job. Since their installation, there have been no operational constraints, and all in all, we’ve had a fantastic experience. The increased throughput has translated into an improved passenger experience, as well as maximizing the operational capacity of our checkpoints,” says Deputy Director of Aviation Jim Chrisley
