Vanderlande has published its FY2023 Sustainability Report, which outlines company’s performance, overall approach and specific activities in this increasingly important area of corporate life.
We are accelerating our efforts to shape a sustainable future. Together.
We are meeting the moment and increasing our positive impact for the sake of the planet. Innovative and fast-growing companies such as ours must:
- work to reduce CO2 emissions
- respect the natural capacity of our planet
- and collaborate with customers and suppliers to implement sustainable solutions and services.
We must also create fair and safe environments. More broadly, how companies operate in harmony with sustainable development is crucial to guarantee the well-being of future generations.
Case studies
We will commit to setting science-based targets in 2023. The SBTi provides companies with a pathway to reducing emissions in line with the Paris greement’s objectives. More than 5,000 organisations have joined the initiative to date.
We have developed a training programme to teach our employees how to apply circular design principles. During FY2023, ten groups of employees – drawn from across all departments and business units – undertook the training, including product managers, service managers, supply chain coordinators, architects, and electrical and mechanical engineers.
This is structured in the form of workshops, and sessions will take place in The Netherlands, USA, India, Spain and Germany. The programme has been co-developed with external experts, and is being delivered by a specialised third party and in-house trainers to ensure a proper follow-up and knowledge building.
Remanufacturing concerns the recovery and regeneration of as many components as possible at, or near, the end of their initial technical life – rather than simply replacing used or worn-out items with new ones. This is an attractive option, because it aligns with our sustainability ambitions, as well as with those of an increasing number of customers and suppliers.
We’re in a strong position to make a positive contribution in this area of circularity. In FY2023, we started an innovation project to investigate the feasibility of supplying remanufactured parts for our solutions. One of our aims is to cooperate with our customers to capture the value from what we all used to consider as waste, and use this more sustainable alternative (as opposed to buying new), without compromising on quality or lifetime.
Through a pilot, a multi-disciplinary team explored the remanufacturing potential of twin divert switches for our high-capacity POSISORTER systems. The initial results show that this process is feasible, as it has been successfully demonstrated via a proof of concept within the factory at our Veghel campus. We have organised the necessary logistics, tools and processes to prepare for the remanufacturing of a first batch of switches.
No one should be harmed in our operations or supply chain. To honour this commitment, we have set global standards that apply to all our offices and manufacturing sites. We have defined minimum HSE standards across our operations to ensure that there is a consistent approach.
Our standards reflect best practices in the field of HSE and are shared across our business. They are designed to be used in conjunction with local health and safety legislation – and if this provides a higher level of protection than our global standard, then the local regulations prevail. The global standards are reviewed regularly to ensure that they meet our requirements, current guidance and best practice.
In FY2023, Vanderlande introduced corporate HSE standards on:
- document development and control
- incident management
- HSE plannning, hazard identification and risk assessment
- machinery product safety
- working at height
- lock out, tag out
- hot work
- and electrical energisation.
In FY2024, we will continue to develop new HSE standards in areas such as personal protective equipment, contractor safety and mobile equipment.
